The Naim Nait 5i, introduced in 2003, represents an important evolution in the production of the Salisbury-based company, retaining the design philosophy of Naim’s historic integrated amplifiers while introducing greater connection flexibility. It is the first model from the brand not to rely exclusively on DIN connections, adopting RCA inputs while still allowing DIN connections to be used for the CD and Tuner inputs.

The preamplifier section is passive, while the power amplifier stage operates in Class AB and delivers 50 W per channel continuously into 8 ohms. The power supply uses a 240 VA toroidal transformer, positioned away from the circuit board to limit electromagnetic interference. The power supply capacitors are located close to both the transformer and the output devices, with a configuration designed to maintain efficient and stable current delivery. The control circuits are also optically isolated from the audio sections and are switched off when not required, helping to reduce interference and background noise.

The design retains the characteristic qualities of Naim products, with reproduction distinguished by speed, rhythmic precision, dynamics, tonal neutrality and clear signal articulation. The integrated amplifier is designed to favour a direct and dynamic presentation, maintaining the brand’s distinctive approach to rhythmic timing and transient response.

Compared with previous Naim amplifiers, the Nait 5i also offers greater freedom in the choice of speaker cables. The integrated amplifier incorporates a Zobel network at the output, helping to stabilise the behaviour of the power stage and eliminating the mandatory use of specifically designed low-capacitance cables, as was the case with several earlier models from the brand.

The connectivity includes four analogue inputs with RCA and DIN connections, an AV input with programmable unity gain for integration into home theatre systems, and a front-mounted 3.5 mm input for portable sources. The iCOM remote control provides management of the main functions of the integrated amplifier.

The chassis combines die-cast zinc and aluminium and is designed to minimise the transmission of vibrations to the internal circuits. The choice of speaker connectors also reflects Naim’s traditional approach, with terminals designed exclusively for use with banana plugs.

Overall, the Nait 5i maintains the essential design philosophy of Naim’s integrated amplifiers, combining a power supply designed to provide substantial current delivery, circuits aimed at reducing interference, and a 50 W-per-channel Class AB power stage.
