The Rega Planar 6 is a belt-drive turntable developed to deliver outstanding performance through a design focused on lightness, structural rigidity, and mechanical precision. Derived directly from the highly acclaimed RP8 and RP10, it represents one of the British manufacturer's most advanced designs in its class, incorporating numerous technical solutions inherited from its higher-end models.
The entire design is built around an innovative ultra-lightweight plinth featuring a Tancast 8 polyurethane foam core, a material originally developed for the aerospace industry, sandwiched between two layers of high-pressure laminate (HPL). This construction combines exceptional rigidity with extremely low mass, minimizing unwanted resonances while preserving the integrity of the signal retrieved from the record. Finished in elegant Polaris Grey with high-gloss black polymer edge trim, the plinth also benefits from a highly durable surface resistant to scratches and everyday wear.
The Planar 6 is equipped with the renowned hand-assembled Rega RB330 tonearm, developed from more than thirty-five years of tonearm design expertise. Its tube geometry has been optimized using advanced 3D CAD technology to redistribute mass more effectively and further reduce resonances, while the new high-precision bearing assembly provides virtually friction-free movement for exceptionally accurate groove tracking. A stainless-steel counterweight completes a design engineered to maximize stability, precision, and the retrieval of fine musical detail.
Rotation is driven by Rega's low-noise 24 V synchronous motor, individually hand-tuned and matched to its dedicated external Neo PSU power supply. This pairing ensures highly accurate speed control while significantly reducing vibration transmitted to the cartridge. The Neo PSU incorporates an advanced DSP-based generator built around a high-stability quartz crystal oscillator, producing an exceptionally pure sine wave and maintaining constant motor drive regardless of fluctuations in the mains supply. In addition to electronic speed selection, it also provides fine speed adjustment, a feature previously reserved for Rega's flagship turntables.
The drive system benefits from several mechanical refinements, including a precision-machined one-piece aluminium sub-platter, a dedicated drive pulley, and Rega's white Upgrade drive belt supplied as standard. The dual-layer smoked and clear glass platter provides high rotational inertia, helping maintain constant speed while minimizing vibration during playback.
Another distinctive feature is Rega's proprietary Double Brace technology, which employs two aluminium braces linking the tonearm mounting and the main bearing housing. This solution increases rigidity in the most critical areas of the structure, improving geometric accuracy while minimizing energy loss throughout the playback system.
Sonically, the Planar 6 stands out for its ability to reproduce the information contained in the record with exceptional transparency, speed, and rhythmic precision. The soundstage is spacious and well organized, while fine detail emerges naturally thanks to the combination of excellent mechanical stability, precise speed control, and the performance of the RB330 tonearm. The overall tonal balance remains highly neutral, delivering a dynamic, fluid, and richly detailed presentation capable of bringing out the best in every musical genre.
Every component of the Planar 6 has been engineered with a single objective: minimizing information loss throughout the analogue playback chain. The integration of advanced materials, refined mechanical engineering, and a sophisticated external power supply enables this turntable to deliver reference-level performance within its class, fully reflecting the design philosophy that has long distinguished Rega products.
