The acclaimed The Feeling’s Back by Chuck Mangione.
A title in the Chesky Original Masters Series.
Chuck Mangione, the son of an Italian-American grocer, played hard bop in a group with his pianist brother before embarking on a solo career in the mid-1960s. In 1978, he joined a select group of successful jazz instrumentalists when his song “Feels So Good” reached No. 1 on the US Adult Contemporary chart. Considered a pioneer of smooth jazz, Mangione founded his own record label in the late 1980s.
Things then quieted down for the Grammy Award winner and recipient of an honorary doctorate from the University of Rochester in New York. But, like the proverbial phoenix rising from the ashes, Mangione returned to the spotlight in 1999 to record The Feeling’s Back for Chesky Records, the first of two albums he made for the audiophile label.
Once again, Mangione effortlessly achieves his characteristic balance between jazz, folk and concert music. On The Feeling’s Back, the trumpeter and flugelhorn player performs his own compositions alongside popular Brazilian songs such as “Manha de Carnaval”, infusing them with his distinctive, wistful touch. He also revisits his major hits “Feels So Good”, “Tarantella” and “Children of Sanchez”, which were played through many high-end loudspeakers in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Hilarie Grey of JazzTimes wrote: “Don’t be fooled by the title: on the engaging new album The Feeling’s Back, Chuck Mangione, pop music’s foremost flugelhorn player, does more than simply revisit his 1978 hit ‘Feels So Good’. While the romantic, mellow lines and graceful melodic choruses that have served as a model for so many other pop instrumentalists are still present, there are also rich world-beat elements and reverent touches of classic jazz that casual Mangione fans might not expect.”
We are pleased to present this reissue of a smooth jazz gem: a 180-gram, 33โ RPM LP, pressed using the One-Step process for the first time.
